Ziegeleipark Heilbronn Böckingen
Office: Stötzer · Neher
The proposal for a new residential park on the grounds of a former brick stone factory in
Böckingen/Heilbronn is characterised by the two poles of artificial and natural. Three main terms build
the strategy for the new park.
Nature generates Design
Nature took part in transforming the site of the former brick stone factory into something new. The derelict,
abandoned area was again part of nature.
Processes of natural development under the conditions of the former human uses created new "natural"
habitats of vegetation which are specific to this landscape and which would not occur under the former
natural conditions.
Only small inconsiderable interventions like in the design of the English Landscape Garden will enable the
use of the area as a park and recreation area for residents and visitors.
Nature designs Art
On the other hand a rural and wild vegetation forms a big contrast to the geometrical landscape of
agriculture, were the site is settled. In a world of natural perfection nature seems to be a artificial
element. The range of plants on this natural island is strictly determined by the natural conditions and
the former human influence on the site. Finding out about these relations makes the fascination of the park
for visitors.
Give and Take
The installations in the park such as walls, pathways, bridges and points of view were made by local sand
stone and brick from the former brick stone factory. Their edges disappear and blur under the rural
vegetation. Nature gets a working surface for new growth to reclaim these human produced elements. Over the
time these elements will be part of nature. They will get illuminated in a wide range of ever new artificial
pictures, differing from season to season.
