Georg-Freundorfer-Platz, Munich
Office: Levin Monsigny Landschaftsarchitekten
Context:
The Georg-Freundorfer-Platz lies in the Westend quarter of Muinch. The traditional working class
neighbourhood, composed of large urban housing blocks has the highest population density in Munich. A new
urban housing project, the Theresienhöhe, located on a former exhibition property borders the
Georg-Freundorfer-Platz. The new development drives the need for additional open space planning as the
square will offer an important meeting place for residents. The new design provides locations for concerts
and multi-functional areas to support playing and leisure.
The square, planned as a green open space in the sixties, is characterised by mature trees and mounds
which form a border between park and quarter. These existing elements are incorporated into the design that
reinstates the lost relationship to the surrounding urban room.
Design:
A frame, with aesthetic and functional purposes surrounds the Georg-Freundorfer-Platz. The frame's design
and use brings unity to the parks differing zones. The frame, acting as a permeable membrane between park
and city organises the internal structure and connection to the surrounding urban environment.
A fine light coloured inlay composed of a wide band of small paving stones and a narrower stripe of mosaic
stones accentuates the dark basalt frame. The park furniture extrudes from the inlay, offering places to
observe city life. At night, integrated lines of light follow the rhythm of the inlay accentuating the
large aerial.
Planted mounds seem to be thrown randomly onto the frame, which are more concentrated in the northern area
of the square. Single passages between mounds invite visitors into the park. Towards the south, the mounds
shrink in size and height until reaching the Theresienhöhe where planted pots stand on the dark stone
frame. As residents and visitors enter the square they are attracted by the protection from trees and
greeted by an abundance of shadow loving plants which include ground covers, grasses and ferns.
